NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – A University of Massachusetts student accused of stabbing an Amherst College student during a party at a dorm has had his bail reduced to $5,000.
Marcus Smith of Boston, who had been held without bail since his district court arraignment, pleaded not guilty in Hampshire Superior Court on Monday to a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Authorities say the 22-year-old Smith, a Boston resident, stabbed Isaac Cameron six to seven times during a fight at Amherst’s Crossett dormitory on Feb. 8.
Cameron suffered a lacerated diaphragm and collapsed lung.
The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that Smith’s defense lawyer said Cameron may have provoked the fight. Smith has been suspended by UMass pending the outcome of his case.
