London, England (SportsNetwork.com) – Chelsea confirmed Friday that the club has signed former Blues striker Didier Drogba on a one-year deal.
Drogba initially joined the club in 2004 at the start of Jose Mourinho’s first stint as Chelsea manager. He went on to score 157 goals in 342 appearances for the London outfit before departing for Shanghai Shenhua in 2012.
“It was an easy decision – I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with Jose (Mourinho) again,” the 36-year-old told the club’s official website. “Everyone knows the special relationship I have with this club and it has always felt like home to me.
“My desire to win is still the same and I look forward to the opportunity to help this team. I am excited for this next chapter of my career.”
Drogba crowning achievement in a Chelsea shirt came in his final match for the club when he converted the winning penalty kick in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 2012.
The Ivory Coast international then made the move to the Chinese Super League before switching to Turkish club Galatasaray after one season.
